Ninth Ward Chickens

about

Chickens are easy to find in this part of town. They are running all around Goat's studio. They are a peculiar breed--city chickens who roam the streets during the day and roost in the trees at night, with a macabre fondness for dining at the Church’s Chicken dumpster. They are pretty tough birds and they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Likewise my friends in the Morning 40 Federation, who were kind enough to learn this song and allow me to crash their recording session (on Mother’s Day, naturally…) to whip this one out. My humblest thanks to the fellows for indulging this particular vision. While I was writing this song I knew it would be perfect for them, and I do believe the proof is in the chicken-pudding. Thanks as well to Goat for his patience, diligence and cunning.

lyrics

well you’ll never get to heaven eating frady’s everyday
well you’ll never get to heaven eating frady’s everyday
first you find yourself a chicken it’ll get you on your way

ninth ward chicken gone way up in the trees
ninth ward chicken gone way up in the trees
ain’t no use in praying when you can’t find your knees

chicken chicken don’t you know it’s getting hot
chicken chicken don’t you know it’s getting hot
don’t hang around the church’s got your sister in the pot

got your sister at the church’s and your brother in the joint
got your sister at the church’s and your brother in the joint
ninth ward chicken don’t see what’s the point

chicken chicken chicken time
ninth ward chicken feeling fine
chicken what you gonna do
up and down the avenue

ninth ward chicken well they don’t know where to roost
ninth ward chicken well they don’t know where to roost
well they can’t get in the tree won’t you give the bird a boost

ninth ward chickens never doing what they told
ninth ward chickens never doing what they told
don’t lay no eggs don’t ever cross the road

chicken chicken chicken time
ninth ward chicken feeling fine
chicken what you gonna do
up and down the avenue
