Young Man's Game

by Alex McMurray

about

I wrote this one for my friend Jonathan Freilich’s birthday a few years back. We lived together for a while back in the day. In May of 1994 I needed a place to stay and Freilich, generous soul that he is, took mercy on me. It was only meant to be temporary but the rent was so cheap it finally took a fire in 2001 to get me out of there. I can’t say we were exactly friends when I moved in, but we got pretty tight as the years passed. We bounced around the lower quarter and Decatur and Frenchmen Streets in the wild and wooly ‘90s, living on air, as my father used to say. Johnny left for much greener pastures in May of ’99 and I remember feeling like we we in the army together and he’d gotten discharged, leaving me to fight the ground war and peel potatoes. The house was on Barracks Street after all, so the vibe was always a bit martial. Anyway, happy 50th birthday to my old friend. I hope to see you in another 50.

Recorded by another great friend, the superb Michael Mehiel at Studio Seurat right here in Bywater, USA, with help from Anthony Cuccia, Jason Jurzak, Carlo Nuccio and of course the man himself Jonathan Freilich on electric guitar.

lyrics

shoulda seen us in '97
biggest springtime under heaven
everything we touched turned to gold
we were young we were dumber than shit
didn't know what to do with it
acting like we never had been told
getting old's a young man's game

we shared the women we shared the wine
couldn't tell what's yours from mine
wouldn't mind to sleep out in the rain
my money well that's yours too
half of nothing gonna have to do
giving up on fortune gonna settle for fame
getting old's a young man's game

my back is broke, my feet are tired
my eyes are a joke and my memory's a liar
that whiskey is calling my name but i'll
save it 'til when you're back some sunny day

time will tell it's often been said
but time is also bound to kill you dead
one day they're going to throw us from the train
life is long--it's a bitch
but i can scratch where i wanna itch
but that old itch just doesn't feel the same
getting old's a young man's game

na na na etc
getting old's a young man's game
